SABR DIAMOND DOLLARS CASE COMPETITION

March 2025

Collaborated in a group of five students to develop a dashboard of new advanced metrics that better evaluate relief pitching performance and address some of the deficiencies found within existing relief pitching metrics. We utilized statistical processes and methods in R to calculate MLB’s best and worst relievers in terms of our metrics. With this information, we developed statistical leaderboards and formed suggestions about how MLB organizations could implement our findings to improve their bullpen usage. The project culminated in a 30-minute presentation at the annual SABR Analytics Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. As part of our presentation, we revealed our new metrics, explained the practicality and applicability of the metrics, and addressed questions from a panel of MLB executives.

CINCINNATI REDS HACKATHON (3RD PLACE)

February 2024

Worked in a group of five, using Python and R to produce a variety of models that ultimately projected which MLB pitchers would fit best in a different role. We were pleased to report high accuracy rates and ultimately settled on Tigers pitcher Tyler Holton (long, high-leverage reliever to starter) and Reds pitcher Nick Lodolo (starter to long, high-leverage reliever) as our ideal role switch candidates. Upon reaching this conclusion, we produced a thorough written summary explaining our process and findings. Then, after being chosen as finalists, we presented our process and findings to members of the Reds’ front office via Zoom. Our group ultimately finished in third place among roughly 50 groups.

BERWICK ACADEMY INNOVATION PROGRAM

Various; from Fall 2014 through Spring 2023

Completed nine Innovation Pursuits at Berwick Academy, setting a school record. These are optional, year-long, student-driven projects incorporating elements of research, originality, creativity, expert interviews, and more. Each project is affiliated with the Innovation Program (run by Ms. Darcy Coffta) and pairs a student with an expert mentor who can provide guidance and support as necessary.

2022-23: Statistically Speaking — An Exploration into the Decline of Youth Baseball
Project Mentor: Mr. Bill Clapp
Conducted extensive research into enrollment trends throughout youth sports with a focus on baseball. Areas of research included injury rates, extra-curricular activities, professional salaries, and one-sport specialization. Project included interview with an industry expert, Ainsley Clapp of Deloitte. Project culminated in a statistical research paper, which can be viewed here. Please note that the paper is still a draft and is not a final version.

2021-22: Emerging from the COVID-19 Pandemic
Project Mentor: Dr. Elizabeth Rosecrum
Conducted extensive research into the impact of COVID-19 on professional sports. Areas of research included testing protocols, "bubble" strategies, short- and long-term shutdowns, and best practices for returning to play. Project included interviews with Dr. Sonia Ruef, trainer for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Ryan Lavarnway, professional baseball player for Team Israel in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. Project culminated in an informational slideshow presentation.

2020-21: Marketing Berwick Athletics
Project Mentor: Mr. James Reynolds
Completed an on-campus internship with the Berwick Academy marketing department, focusing on a variety of projects pertaining to the athletic department. Projects included Fogg Walk Friday videos, contributing revisions to the student social media handbook, writing press releases and blog posts for the athletics website (including this coverage of Mike Eruzione's return to campus), and creating various schedule and results graphics for distribution to official social media channels.

2019-20: A Deep Dive into Sports Marketing
Project Mentor: Mr. Logan Bement
Conducted extensive research into marketing operations for the four major sports, their teams, and their minor league affiliates. Project included two shadow opportunities with the Portland Sea Dogs, including spending one day in the marketing and ticketing offices with Mr. Chris Cameron and another day working on web content with Mr. Michael Antonellis. Project was abbreviated due to the COVID-19 pandemic but ultimately culminated in a remote presentation of findings, plus background research into starting a pro sports team from scratch.

2018-19: Behind the Desk of Andersen Pickard
Project Mentor: Mr. Logan Bement
Complemented my existing passion for journalism with an increased focus on marketing web content. Project components included tracking article view counts and social media impressions to track which methods of digital marketing are most and least effective. Additionally, interviewed industry experts in a variety of fields, including journalism, talent representation, and digital marketing. Project included a trip to Las Vegas for the Baseball Winter Meetings (sponsored by Berwick Academy Athletic Boosters and Parent Community), in which I received press credentials through SI Kids. I became the youngest person ever to receive press credentials for the Winter Meetings. At the event, I conducted one-on-one interviews with Joe Torre, Nathan Eovaldi, and Alex Cora, completed a one-on-one interview with Al Avila in his private suite, and attended various press conferences with other members of the national media. Assignments at the Winter Meetings included an end-of-event recap for SI Kids and various news stories for MLB Daily Dish. This experience allowed me to learn about the industry and strengthened my ability to identify and connect with reputable sources. Additionally, this project allowed me to learn more about writing grant requests for financial support.

2017-18: Bulldog Unleashed
Project Mentor: Ms. Lia Bensley
Created a central online hub for Berwick Academy athletic information, modeled on the SportsZone at Rochester Institute of Technology. Components of the project included designing a website using Wix, manually importing all athletic rosters into the website, tracking game schedules and results, writing athletics-related articles, interviewing Athletic Director Robb Quinn, live-streaming various high school varsity athletic contests, and composing other written and video content. Additionally, interviewed Chris Cotillo (formerly of MLB Daily Dish and currently with MassLive) and Ken Rosenthal (currently with The Athletic) regarding sports journalism and the demands of producing sports content in a digital world. Additionally, this project allowed me to learn more about writing grant requests for financial support.

2016-17: The Bulldog Report Podcast
Project Mentor: Ms. Stephanie Sanders
Recorded and produced weekly podcasts with pertinent information for the Berwick Academy middle school community. Segments of the podcast included weather, jokes, event information, athletic results and schedules, lunch menus, and more. Components of this project included researching my target audience, purchasing software and equipment, choosing an online hosting platform, conducting audio interviews with podcast guests, recording and publishing weekly episodes, and distributing episodes to the middle school community. Additionally, this project allowed me to learn more about writing grant requests for financial support.

2015-16: Writing a Book
Project Mentor: Ms. Teaya Fitzgerald
Conducted industry interviews and extensive research into the process behind writing a book. Through my research, I discovered that components of writing a book include preliminary research, various stages of drafts and edits, locating an artist to design illustrations, and negotiating/communicating with a publisher. I attempted to write a youth novel of my own about a teenage baseball player. While I did not finish writing the book, I did gain valuable knowledge and experience.

2014-15: Through the Lens of Andersen Pickard
An Extension of the 4th Grade Passion Project
Extended my Passion Project into a year-long portfolio covering my interest in photography. Took photos and videos using knowledge gained via extensive research and an interview with Ms. Lora Allison. Explored various types of photos and videos, including sports photos and time-lapse videos. Project culminated in a slideshow presentation showcasing my findings and my portfolio.
